Typically, a tall, conical, Christmas-tree-like variety tends to have a clean sweet taste, often a lighter body, with various floral and sometimes wood flavors; depending on the local landscape and farmer practices, they can taste a "cherry" flavor, usually caramelized. As a convention, but not a rule, I found Typica to be the best black. They also look terrible in Puna. Perhaps it was the pahoehoe volcanic landscape, or the occasional torrential rain, but we noticed that Puna Typica attracted insects, produced very little, and continued to appear painful. We decided to let Typica grow in Kona and Kau.
