A research team at Hokkaido University in Japan has confirmed that nerve cells in the horse area of the brain responsible for memory and learning form memories by the same mechanism as heart muscle cells contract, and that caffeine and other foods can enhance their activities and improve memory.
Caffeine has been known to cause muscle contraction, but the researchers added caffeine to slices of the hippocampus of rats and showed that calcium levels in nerve cells increased and that within 30 to 60 minutes, nervous system signaling became excellent.
It is reported that the increase in calcium concentration is due to the more active activity of a protein called "type II Reynolds receptor". This protein is also abundant in heart muscle cells, which can release calcium ions stored in the "small cell body" inside the cell, thus causing the heart muscle to contract. The researchers suggest that the mechanism by which this memory-forming function is enhanced in the hippocampus should be the same as the mechanism by which the heart contracts.
Due to the high concentration of caffeine used in this experiment, the effect on nerve cells is obvious, and if you want to improve your memory by drinking coffee daily, the concentration is probably far from enough, and there will be no effect. However, the researchers said that if the same substance as caffeine can be developed in the future, it is believed that it will play an important role in the development of drugs for the treatment of dementia.
