Karani washing station

The Karani washing station is part of the Kabare cooperative. The washing station has 634 active members, half of whom are women.

Karani lies on the edge of the forest of Mount Kenya. The soil around the washing station is mainly composed of volcanic ash. The members of the Karani washing station are small-scale farmers who also grow other cash crops, such as macadamia nuts and tea. Farmers in this area are easy to learn and enthusiastic about their craftsmanship.

The coffee is selected by hand and sent to the washing station for pulping. Clean water from the Lagerty River is used in the washing process-water is recycled.
