According to media reports, some coffee producing areas in Rwanda ushered in the coffee harvest season half a month earlier than in previous years. Thanks to abundant rainfall at the end of last year, coffee is expected to increase by 50 per cent to 24000 tons this season. At present, affected by the international financial crisis, the international price of coffee has fallen to 4.1 US dollars per kilogram. Affected by this, the purchase price of Rwandan coffee cherries has dropped from 200 rupees per kilogram to 170 rupees. This is the first time that coffee prices have fallen during the harvest season.
In 2011, Rwanda's coffee exports earned US $75 million, an increase of 33.9% over the previous year, ranking fourth after tourism, mining and tea exports.
