After hitting a four-and-a-half-month low yesterday, ICE- September Arabica coffee futures rose 1.85 cents, or 1.1%, to close at $1.7295 a pound, up more than $3 at one point in early trading.
"there has been some short covering in the market, and there may be some new buying because investors are not sure of yesterday's downtrend." Said RodrigoCosta, head of the coffee department at NewedgeUSA.
London International Financial Futures and options Exchange (LIFFE)-September Robusta coffee futures climbed $25, or 1.2%, to $2063 a tonne, reaching a seven-week high of $2085 on Thursday.
ICE- October raw sugar futures rose 0.17 cents, or about 1%, to close at 17.68 cents per pound. Intraday trading was volatile and trading was weak.
LIFFE- 's August white sugar contract closed up $3.20, or 0.7%, at $465.20 a tonne.
ICE cocoa futures closed up $17, or 0.5%, at $3116 the following month. LIFFE- September cocoa futures closed up 7 pounds at 1931 pounds a tonne.
