India will open its first Starbucks at the end of this month.
Although Starbucks has nearly 20,000 stores around the world, the opening of its first store in India is a "breakthrough from zero" and a hard-won one. Starbucks originally planned to open its first store in India last year, but due to high land prices and government policy restrictions, the investment cost was too high to compete with local companies. As a result, Starbucks secretly entered into a joint venture with Tata Beverages, a subsidiary of India's Tata Group, as desired.
