Coffee is also "sick". According to Hong Kong's "East net" on May 19, the US government is stepping up efforts to help Central American farmers fight a devastating coffee disease in order to stem the rise in coffee prices.
It is reported that the fungus, known as "coffee rust", has caused more than $1 billion (6.23 billion yuan) in damage in Latin America. The fungus is particularly deadly to Arabica beans used to make high-end and specialty coffee and has affected the price of this coffee in the United States.
USAID Director Shah will announce plans on Monday to allocate $5 million to work with the World Coffee Research Center at Texas A & M University to try to eliminate the fungus.
