After a year of the double whammy of human and plant diseases, the Hawaiian Coffee Association (the Hawaii Coffee Association) is preparing to host its online conference and cup test contest in 2021.

The online meeting, which coincides with the final of the 12th Hawaiian Coffee Cup Test Competition, will be held from June 24 to June 25 for two days. These included an award ceremony to be held at 5 p.m. on June 25.

The online meeting is free for members and non-members of the Coffee Association of Hawaii. The deadline for registration for the cup test competition is May 21.

Over the past year, the state of Hawaii has been outspoken about global pandemic outbreaks, contributing to slowing the human COVID-19 and the spread of leaf rust in coffee plants.

One of the well-known pathogens causing coffee leaf rust, Hemileia Vastatrix, first entered human sight in East Africa and Sri Lanka in the 1860s. Since then, the disease has spread all over the coffee growing areas of the world. Coffee leaf rust has a strong ability to spread, and its destruction can also destroy coffee crops.

Around 2012, small local farmers found coffee leaf rust in some coffee-growing areas of South America, Central America and Mexico, which are still plagued by its rapid spread. The disease was first detected in October 2020 in the Haiku area of Maui, Hawaii. Two weeks later, the killer coffee crop, the strain that causes leaf rust, was discovered on the island of Hawaii.

"2020 is a year when COVID-19 and coffee leaf rust are domineering, and we will be sure to solve these multiple crises in 2021." Chris Manfredy (Chris Manfredi), president of the Hawaiian Coffee Association, said at a recent online conference in 2021.

At this 2021 event, EmilioLopez Diaz, a pioneer in the boutique coffee industry, will deliver a keynote speech entitled "coexistence with Coffee Leaf Rust" (Living with Coffee Leaf Rust).
