An international research team released a genetic map of coffee on September 4th, saying it would help improve the taste of the world's most popular drink.
According to Hong Kong's Oriental Daily on September 5, the genetic map could help scientists develop stronger varieties of coffee plants with better quality and resistance to drought. Rahimi, a researcher at the French Institute for Development Research, said the discovery could be an important step in improving coffee.
People around the world drink 2.25 billion cups of coffee a day. According to the International Coffee Organization, the coffee industry employs 26 million people in 52 countries and exports totaled US $15.4 billion in 2013. Major coffee exporters include Brazil, Colombia, Viet Nam, Ethiopia, Indonesia and many Central American countries.
